I know NASA have planned a manned mission to Mars in the next couple of decades, but considering the fate of the space shuttle it doesn't look great.

I doubt it. The decline of fossil fuels will produce a worldwide energy crisis, and the glowing plans and promises of the space agency officials will simply fade away as the energy shortage emergency deepens. Don't count on mankind ever leaving his planetary cradle. Earth is where our species was born, and Earth is where it will rot. He had his chance, but he wasted it on foolish sentimental and egalitarian projects.

Hi>
I know that out of seven low orbit shuttles, two have had a disaterous result.
Hoiwever, the old NASA joke about "Need Another Seven Asronauts" is a bit weak.
I'm sure the folks are determined to put people on Mars, and it it is not only feasible, but very likely within about ten years.
I intend to go along, if invited.
Should be interesting.

i imagine it really is available. the U. S., China, Japan or perhaps India all have their points of interest set on the moon. I type of desire this recommend a clean spacerace comes alongside. Russia (or particularly Putin) seems more effective interested in progression more effective defense force hardware yet even as they understand they'll income more effective understand by technique of going decrease back into area the 2d maximum efficient spacenation after the U. S. might want to do something particularly unpredicted and connect forces with the very cashloaded chinese language and announce a joined chinese language/russian manned challenge to Mars. in the adventure that they did they could go interior of 20 years. i'm shocked that russia haven´t joined the hot spacerace yet. the U. S. beat them to the moon. How can they sit down decrease back and do not something even as the chinese language are going? How can they enable themselves to be beaten back? someone might want to tell the chinese language that the russians have all the hardware needed, the Energija rocket, to visit the moon, mars and previous in basic terms sitting contained in the Kasachstan plains waiting for a consumer...

I agree with Jenab6 regarding the coming energy crisis. Bush himself alluded to something similar in a speech today. But that's another issue (worthy of its own Q&A). I too do not think it is likely for that and other reasons.

Others have mentioned radiation. That would certainly be a big issue. The Sci-Fi author Ben Bova proposed a possible solution in one of his novels. It was something along the lines of putting deuterium tanks and other materials in strategic places to protect the astronauts from nuclear particles. While not stopping x-rays and gamma rays, it might help against protons and neutrons, which cannot penetrate as readily as waves.

I think that if it was given high priority and properly financed, then it would be doable. But we would have to start soon, and I don't think that is likely to happen.

As well as the threat from solar radiation, what about the affects of no gravitational field on the blood stream. On Earth, our bodies have adapted to the confines, gravity and physical restraints of this Planet. !8 months in Space could have dire consequences for the Astronaut.
I would really like it to become possible all the same. I still remember watching the grainy pictures of the Astronauts taking their first steps on the Moon!!!

Won't happen.

Too expensive, since Resident Bush has bankrupted the US government with huge tax cuts for the rich.

Too technologically difficult, since Christians have blocked the proper teaching of science and biology in the public schools.

Not unless they can get the radiation problem solved. That much time in space exposed to Gamma, X ray, and Cosmic, might be enough to kill them before they got back to earth. It is a BIG problem nobody really wants to admit.

Garyomega is correct. Until shielding from solar radiation can be developed, people would die a terrible death before they could return to Earth. :-(=
