One common mistake people make is thinking that they can just to sit-ups and really focus on the tummy. The truth is, however, that you also need to have a good cardio routine and also work the rest of your "core."
The cardio will help keep the magic calorie equation in your favor (meaning you are burning more calories that you are eating) and the core will strengthen all the mucles around your tummy helping for that nice overall fit look.
For help with exercises and a customized fitness and nutrition plan you can check out one of the free healthy living websites like:

Good luck!

I work out at least 3 times a week about an hour each time. I try for 5 days a week, but don't always have time. I do a mixture of cardio, pilates, and yoga. Pilates and yoga really concentrate on the core (which is your abs). I also do at least 200 ab excerises a night to really focus on my abs. I totally notice a difference. The main thing is to work out period. Always try to keep your stomach in because that also helps bulid muscle there.

are you generally overweight? if so, losing weight in general will help with the tummy. all the exercise in the world will not help if there is a layer of fat over your ab muscles.
if you are already slim but with a bloated belly, try a dairy-free diet. works like a dream. i also get a really flat tummy when following a low-carb diet (also going easy on cheese).
as far as exercise, jogging did wonders for my abs.

aerobics is best for fat burning. first is running, all else is somewhat less effective.
also look into the proper method for crunches for your higher, lower/deep, and side abs.
diet is crucial too..if you keep putting back the fat/cholesterol calories post-workout, it doesnt work.
and for the extra mile, conditioning. a few simple yoga moves a day will do it, no headstands required.
