I plan to install a direct to stud kit in my bathroom. I do not want to remove the wallboard, but rather go over top of the existing tile. I need to remove the outer row of tile so the kit will sit flush against the wall. I don't know if there is a stud behind where I need to screw it to the wall; probably not. Can I just use adhesive to attach it to the wall or do I need to screw it in? If so, what is the best kind of adhesive?

If you do not attach the tub surround as instructed, then how are you going to cover up the edges so it doesn't look like it was put in incorrectly? Adhesive may hold the surround still for a while, but it will loosen eventually. Do you want to glue it every other week? Fiberglass flexes when you stand and move around in the tub. Good luck with whatever you decide to do, who am I to say what will work for you. There is a reason they have installation instruction with things you buy.

You should have studs in the corners but maybe not where the kit ends . You can buy an adhesive that's special made for Fiberglas that will work. I assume the kit is Fiberglas. I'm surprised the directions don't mention this.

If it is direct to stud, you should really install it that way. That's why so many people have so many problems in their house, people not taking the time to install things properly.
