Don't mess with the amanitas. You should be an expert to distinguish the various species. And environmental conditions can change their form to confuse the experts and suicidal amateurs. Some of the poisons in them are amanitin, muscarine, muscamol etc. ingest the wrong one and you will die of liver poisoning. Or take the wrong dose of one that is hallucinogenic and good bye guy. And it takes 20 to 28 days to die an excrutiating death. You seem to get better about 4 or 5 days in and then you take a turn for the worse and eventually die. The poisons are hepatotoxic. They trash your liver. A liver transplant will save you if you can find a match in time.
If you must go this route. Google Roger Heim and Wasson. These are two eccentric, experts who devoted a lot of time and money studying, researching, and publishing on the subject. (the latter was a wealthy businessman and it was a hobby for him, he financed their work and publishing). Their books were very expensive, limited publication, when first published, and their cost are probably prohibitively expensive now. Your best bet is to get into Northwest Siberia and get friendly with the locals who injest it on long, cold winter nights when they have nothing else to do.
They knknow the fungi and the dosages to be used. The survivers passed on that information generations ago to their successors.
The Lapp people in Northern Finland also played with the fungus. The stories about flying reindeer and a red suited gentleman (a.k.a. Santa, may come from their folklore.)
If you mess with it alone write your will and I sincerely wish you good luck.
Doc. Dan.
p.s. Some of them are called fly amanitas as their extracts were used as fly killers in the 19'th. century.

You bet they are. The Tungus people of Siberia use them as "magic mushrooms" -- to take drug trips -- but they know just how much to take and how to bring themselves down if they take a particularly strong one. Unless you have this information and are a mycologist, don't fool with them.
Especially since fly agaric (Amanita muscaria) is almost identical to the Death Angel (Amanita caesaria). Just a bite of one of those puppies can put you down for good, and even if you get an antidote immediately they can do a number on your liver that will keep you hurting for the rest of your life.
If you can't stand not trying them, get a good mycology text to be absolutely sure of your identification. (BTW they can stand being frozen, so you don't have to eat them the minute they're picked.) Then get a good text on Shamanic practice that will tell you _exactly_ what the right dosage is.
Then make sure you're carrying a rabbit's foot. Can't be too careful with stuff like this.

SERIOUSLY DANGEROUS AND DO NOT EAT---good way to need a liver transplant and believe the toxin is NOT curable----
more data to follow as soon as I can dig it out of journals---
PLEASE DO NOT EAT!
Found article in August 2006 RN magazine---www.rnweb.com---"When to suspect this backyard poison". Toxins in mushrooms vary depending on species; authors note that amatoxin (found in some amanita species) has NO specific antidote and mortality rate (that's DEATH RATE) can hit as high as 90% if liver failure and sepsis intervene.
Apparently a LOT of the mushrooms can look very much alike---so much so that even "spore prints" can fool good naturalists---and you're really playing with your life here.
Direct quote, p. 26: "Warn patients treated for mushroom poisoning---and any other outdoor enthusiast you care for, for that matter---not to eat any uncultivated mushrooms, ever. Point out that contrary to what they may have heard, mushroom poisons aren't destroyed or deactivated by cooking, canning, or other processing. Nor is it true that any mushroom consumed by birds or insects is safe for human consumption."
Please, please don't try it!

Amanita muscaria can make you sick or kill you, as far as I know.
