This is our second child and my parents live 500 miles away. I will see them for Christmas, but my wife will be a little more than 4 months pregnant by then. Is it better to do this over the phone or to wait until Christmas?

If you want to surprise them wait till Christmas, whats the big deal?
If you dont want to wait and you have an ultra sound picture tell them you are sending them something special in the mail...
Or, you can just call them and have your first child give them the news if he or she can speak yet., Im sure they will be happy regardless...

Just tell them. if you don't tell them now they will be a little bit disappointed you didn't tell them sooner. I called my mom and told her my wife was pregnant because I was in Germany at the time. I mean what if I had waited and I showed up after my daughter was born and said Hey this is your granddaughter. She might have been a little mad. Just do it. Don't plan anything special or wait til a special occasion like some people may tell you or use it as a christmas present. They will be glad you told them. Calll now

Wait until Christmas dinner and then say "My wife is pregant..please pass the potatoes". HA HA! No, really....you should probably call them and let them know....I am sure they will be pleased and would rather know now than to show up and see her belly bump and feel like they have been left out...besides, it may affect the gifts you recieve this year! :)
You could always send them an early Christmas card with a picture from the ultrasound...that's how we shared our news once.

Me personally, I'd like to see the looks on their faces when they are told they will be grandparents again. But if you don't want to wait that long perhaps a lovely card sent and went opened asked to call, "very important" news awaits. If both parties have a webcam you could do it that way?!

My Sister told our parents one Christmas, but instead of verbally doing it, they gave them a greeting card to annouce it...our parents weren't sure why they were told to open the card early but were so so happy when they read it.

Regardless, they will be excited...and whether you tell them now or at Christmas it will be a celebration!!

Congrats on the "bun in the oven". May he/she be happy and healthy!

I would be upset and sad if my son didn't tell me for 4 months. Parents get excited, especially when they're the first to know. Although it may sound like a nice Christmas present, over the phone is better, then they won't wonder why you kept it from them.

UNLESS they are of ill health I'd wait until Christmas. And I would try to find a creative way to let them know. Like wrap up the announcement in a box, something like this. Good Luck and Congratulations.

i think in any pregnancy, you're justified in waiting until the 3rd month to say anything to anyone (first 3 months is when most things go wrong). so, if you wait that long, you could easily wait until the 4th month.

on the other hand, new babies are always great news, and i'm sure your parents would be just as happy to get that news over the phone. congratulations!

This is the happiest moment, how can u keep this happy moment until Christmas? Pick-up the phone & call. Everyone will rejoice and who knows your parents may wanna visit u & help u 2 take care of ur wife.

GOD bless

Hi,
I am 63 years old and have three children and when my daughter was pregnancy I was thrill to here about it by phone. The sooner you tell them the sooner the grand parents can start dreaming about the new baby and making plans.
A happy grandmom

You should get your first child a shirt that says big brother/sister on it and have them were it at christmas and see if they notice. It's a cute way to let them know what is going on.
