Pretty much all teachers care a lot about their students. However, you are the one who needs to decide how comfortable you are sharing personal information with any particular teacher. While "pastoral carer" may make it sound like talking to your teacher carries the same confidentiality as confessing to a priest, that's not at all true. In most places there's no law at all requiring teachers to be confidential about anything. Most will be respectful of your confidentiality, but there's no guarantee of that. What's more, in many places teachers are required by law to report to authorities some things they hear students say (such as if a child was abused). That's mostly a good thing, but it's also very much a violation of confidentiality.

As a special ed teacher I can say YES, we honestly care about our students. Teachers are the lowest paying job after obtaining a 4 year degree! We are not in it for the money, we are in it because we want to make a difference in a child's life. And regarding the confidentiality matter, yes, we keep it to ourselves. You can tell us about the acid you took and the sex you had, etc, and it stays with us. There is one exception to the rule, we must report if there is child abuse (we call CPS, child protective services), okay, two things we report, we also must report potential harm, for example if someone says (and it is believable) there will be a shooting tomorrow, or something of that nature. I don/t know your age, but if you are in school, there will be a teacher you can trust. Unfortunately, there are also some who do not care, I haven't a clue why they teach, they shouldn't be, anyways, for the most part, we care, and we love our students!

Some teachers care, some don't. Confidentiality rules vary from state to state, but there are some things which teachers and other professionals must report, such as sexual abuse.
