The ergot poisoning played a key role in the events that surrounded the Salem witch trials. Had the science and medicine been available, they would have been able to avoid the catastrophe that happened. It is unfortunate that the fear of the unknown, when combined with the social dynamics of their society, led to so much misery and death. The blight of ergot poisoning has left a dark stain on the history of human behavior.

What I've done is summarized what your paper likely covered, suggested a possible alternative, and taken a retrospective standpoint that states that we have learned from the past.

Well it's hard to say without reading your whole essay, but you could finish it up by pointing out the main points you made...

"Although ergot poisioning isn't the explanation of the events in Salem, it was a key factor in the behavior of the girls. Ergot poisioning has been linked to hallucinations (or whatever), much like those the girls experienced, and may have possibly been a catalyst of the initial events. Ultimately, however, it was (something else, social uproar or whatever) that caused the events that occurred in the 1600's in Salem, MA."

List the other factors, or perhaps reiterate how it was a key factor, or explain the repercussions.
