Written by Stephen Foster. It's been covered by a million different bands and singers. My favorite version of the song is by The Byrds. They replace the banjo sound with McGuinn's famous electric 12 string. They also put a really smartass/ironic spin to the song.

Members of the Mamas and the Papas and the Lovin' Spoonful recorded it also.

Thomas Hampson may have done a more traditional version of it and there's also a wonderful Robert Shaw recording of Foster sung by a chorus. Check Amazon to see if it's still in print.

The Byrds version is a lot of fun, though - almost punky.
