First you need to make sure there is no male around the mom as the mom can get pregnant again (breedback). If you haven't removed the male count ahead about 111 days and watch for more babies.

Mom will pretty much take care of the kits. You do need to make sure that the cage is baby proofed as they can fit through very small spaces cardboard around the cage is a quick fix. Make sure the mom and kits are confined to one level so that the kits can stay warm with mom and mom can't can't get to far away from the kits after eating the kits bellies should feel full. Mix water and cranberry juice half and half as this will help the mothers milk come in. Make sure mom and kits have lots of pellets and hay to eat. Kits can start munching on hay within a week of birth. Weight the babies with a gram scale daily to make sure they are gaining weight if not please check with a vet on how to suppliment feed. You can handle your kits but usually only to check weight and health for the first week. Kits are usually weaned around 10 weeks and male kits need to be moved to a seperate cage as they can start breeding very young.

There is nothing more natural than an animal having babies, and for the most part there isn't much to do other than make sure they are comfortable and keep the stress level low for the new mom. Make sure she has a nice (and big enough) place to hide for the first week or two with a solid floor so the babies won't have their little feet falling through wire. A large shoe box works great, but don't use one with a lot of writing on it since there is some debate about the ink not being good for the chins. Make sure she has pleanty of fresh food and water. And most importantly, make sure the cage they are in is "babyproof" and that the wire holes are no bigger than 1" x 1" or the babies will get out. Other than that, ENJOY them. If you have any further questions you are more than welcome to e-mail me directly at crittercrazy76@aol.com and I'll help in what ever way I can. I have been breeding chinchillas for over 11 years and still love being able to help those just getting started :-)

first of all calm down. i don't have them but i know some basics, now is the mother caring for them or trying to harm them? if she's doing the mother thing then just call the vet to help you, but if she is trying to hurt them remove them like yeaterday! i'm guessing this is her first time so she might need help if she isn't caring for them at all. best thing i can say though is call a vet they went to shool to deal with this kinda stuff.
