my 2 cents:
First and Ipod is nothing special, it is a MP3 player. (except the video version, which I guess you would call a media player).
Ipod Pros:
Very well made
Popular
Excellent software; Itunes is easy to use and stable
tons of accessories available.
Ipod Cons:
Over priced: because they are so popular
Batteries: decent life but costly to replace
Quicktime is default media player (Quicktime sucks!!!)
Other MP3 players (or media players)
Pros:
lower cost, with same functionality.
they do not share the same battery problem as Ipods.
you are not forced to use Quicktime player.
Cons:
decent software, just not as good as Itunes
limited selection of accessories.
Do not buy an Ipod just because it is an Ipod. The bottom line is you want something to listen to MP3s. All of them will do that, why waste the extra money just to be like everyone else and buy and Ipod without thinking?

My kids each have an MP3 player but neither and IPOD. If you buy an MP3 that has the ability to add SD cards and buy SD cards off the intranet it will definitely be much cheaper. While the full IPOD and Media IPOD may have more features the IPOD mini has less than your average MP3 player at a higher cost.
Shop around and try them out. Find one you like at a price you want to pay. Also look online as you can find some good MP3 player deals online.

1] Advantages of iPOD:
the Duke iPods adopted the format of the iTunes store so students can purchase academic materials, course outlines, language lessons, and yes of course: music. We look specifically at iTunes in the fourth section of this book.
In addition, there’s also the thriving audiobook market. We’ve come a long, long way from a binder full of tapes! Now, entire books can be downloaded onto an iPod, and enjoyed on the go.
These audiobooks include everything from young fiction to romance, from business books to self-help, and everything in between.
So if you’re currently using your iPod just for music – or that’s what you plan to do when you buy one – remember that it can indeed be used for so much more.
2] Multiple Language Supports:
Thinking of buying an iPod and sending it to a relative or friend overseas? If so, then you might be concerned about the menu, and the fact that it’s in English. Well, worry no more!
Actually, initial versions of the iPod already offered 14 different languages. Now, especially since sales of the iPod have boomed worldwide, latest generation versions offer more than twice as many languages, including: Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean,
ü Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, Swedish, Traditional, Chinese, Turkish
Also, for song information only, the iPod menu supports:
Bulgarian, Croatian, Romanian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Ukrainia
3] Knows when You’re Listening…
Speaking of versatility, one advantage that the iPod has it that it can sense whether headphones are being used or not. If you’re listening to music and you pull the headphone jack out of its port, the iPod will pause.
But remember that if you re re-attach the headphones, the music will not play by itself, you’d have to do that manually.
However, if you’ve set your iPod to sleep mode or turned off, plugging in the headphones will get the song to play again.
4] CARRY Whereva u go
