The internet was actually first used by the military. During the Cold war, everyone was afraid that the Russuans would nuke us. Well, the military had computers in several different locations. They all stored very important infomation, and if one of those locations where the computers were stored was nuked, than that information would be gone forever. The military started a program called ARPANET. This was a program to link all those computers together so they could share the information. The first network was born. This concept later on became known as the intenet.

Someone give me a thumbs up please

The internet was originally a cross-country network between some colleges for the exchange of scientific information. As more colleges began to connect to this network, the government discovered that having such a network for its own uses would put the U.S. ahead of the rest of the world. Thus our government developed ARPAnet, which our Defense Department modified and re-designated as DARPAnet. Of course, the American people wanted the freedom of using this new network, so the internet was designed for public use, while the government and military kept their own secure portions of the network.

Today, the internet has exploded across the entire globe, though it's not as widely accepted in some countries; they're working on it.
