Perhaps the assumption of intelligence refers to a persons ability to provide and clear, organized, and thoughful argument for their opinion.

It makes sense to think someone is not very intelligent, or rather they are ignorant, if they have views but no way to back up their positions..... When their ideas are mainstream but not thought out or with conviction.

I have known many highly intelligent people with whom I have disagreed about certain things. The reason I would call them intelligent is because they actually could express the reasons for their opinions.

I just answered the question posed by a self proclaimed mental genius? And his question was not intelligent at all. But, I will point out something here. Some views are facts. Some views are not. And the ability to decipher the difference IS a good indicator of intelligence.

Well because someone who firmly believes that they and they alone are correct will then assume all others to be unintelligent unless they say they agree with said person.

because its a way of slinging mud on them, the same reason that when people run out of credible argument, they then refure to the person as a nazi.
