Saddam Hussain's uncle stole a cheese pastie on a visit to the White House when on a visit to see Bush Senior many years ago. Ever since they have been feuding and Bush Junior, when installed as President, vowed to his dad that he would one day bring the cheese pastie back home. Rumour has it though that the Americans accidentally bombed the room in which the pastie was kept and it is now burnt and covered in brick dust.

Here's what Wikipedia says:

The Gulf War (1990–1991) (also called the Persian Gulf War, First Gulf War, or Operation Desert Storm) was a conflict between Iraq and a coalition force of approximately 20 nations led by the United States and mandated by the United Nations in order to liberate Kuwait.

The war began with the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait on August 2, 1990, following Iraqi contentions that Kuwait was illegally slant-drilling petroleum across Iraq’s border.

So it was started because of oil, but that's not why the US got involved and it didn't help oil prices to go to war with these nuts. If we need more oil in the US, we'd be better off drilling for it right here at home. Surveys show we're floating in oil in North America. Depending on these unstable countries in the Mid East for oil is ridiculous. We'd be smarter to build more refineries and oil rigs in the US. Now if only the environmentalists would let us.

I wish everyone would stop making uninformed statements! It had nothing to do with oil. The USA has enough of its own and it can get plenty from other middle east countries.
The reason we went into Iraq was because Saddam was only left in power following the '91 Gulf war as he surrendered and agreed to various restrictions, exactly the same as the Germans following WW1.
The fact Saddam wouldn't keep to his word and kept refusing entry to UN inspectors made the UN deeply suspicious of his intentions.
Bush made the ballsy decision to go in and remove Saddam from power. Tony Blair made a mistake in saying it was over wmd's, in my view he was worried about being perceived as an aggressor in the middle east, but its back fired.
The oil remains in the control of the Iraqi government and the west hasn't gained from it at all. So I'd like to know why everyone thinks it was over oil.

To say that it is oil is far too simplified even for here.
Read on--USA needed to show the world their military prowess and there was nothing in Afghanistan to bomb the heck out of. So Bush and Cheney[where is he these days] needed another target to hit and Saddam was in their sights, if you can remember back to the first Gulf War, Saddam tried to get a hit on Bush senior, and junior knew this. He let the cat out of the bag when he answered a reporters question by saying that HE STILL HAD A SCORE TO SETTLE WITH SADDAM HUSSEIN. Look back and you will see for yourself. Basically they needed to make a statement and IRAQ was it.

The great American plan for world domination.
To dominate the world America first has to secure oil reserves, they can do this by setting up puppet governments in the middle East. After they have secured their oil supply they will begin challenging any power to stand up to them, so Syria, North Korea, China, Russia, and Europe better look out, this will insure American dominence as the one and only superpower far into the 21st century.

For the same reason that Iran is next on their hit-list.
To ensure that China can't get a foothold on the Middle East oilfields. The USA wants to control the world's oil supplies.
