A friend of mine, who is a private person, normally doesn't want to write a blog, because he thinks showing everything to the world is not suitable for him.

However, he is tempted to create one now. The reason is he has been working overseas for a long time. So the person risks losing touch with many childhood friends, who stay local and may not know what he is at the moment. So he wants to write something, so friends can feel a bit closer to him. But he's still not sure.

Do you think creating a blog can help?

I personally don't like writing a blog. If you want to stay in touch with people just phone them or send emails. I wouldn't like the whole world to know what I've been doing or what I'm planning to do. Your life becomes open book.

I don't think people write whole secrets and privates in the blog. Blog is simply to share your ideas and experience in the form of log book. I have never read a blog with personal information and private matter. I have my blog myself but never take it as my Diary. I simple write my opinions and experience and sometime I post some article on certain topics. Never make mistake by uploading private things over internet.

I'd tell your friend to go for it.

He'll only be showing things to the world if the world actually find his blog & read it. Even then he may not know who they are & what they think ... especially if he turns off comments.

Having a blog saves him from writing individual emails or letters (oops does this mean it is the lazy way out?) & allows him to share photos, etc. of where he is.

It will also give him a record of himself & what he's been doing - one that he could look back on in later years & remember.

Why not - he will have control over what he puts in the blog so he doesn't have to reveal private thing about his sex life or anything. He can include basic info on what he is up to, how his life is going and he will remain in touch with people he knows so he shouldn't get too lonely. How can he lose?

Definately. Its a great way. He can load images online too and keep everyone close. People can add comments and they will all feel like he is just down the road...

Unless he is rubbish at writing or his life is very dull. Then he is likely to loose friends and family when they see the truth in cold hard pixel format.
