I am 31 weeks pregnant and I notice that my baby gets the hiccups (or what seems to be the hiccups) every so often. What causes their hiccups while they're still in the womb?

Foetal hiccups are much the same as the hiccups we get and are caused by reflex spasms of the diaphragm. In unborn babies however, this is due to the drawing in and out of amniotic fluid, rather than air........ You think its bad now, wait till after the little tucker is born... GOOD LUCK! all the best

LOL @ the air bubbles answer... there aren't any air bubbles in there!!

my baby had hiccups AT LEAST once a day when i was pregnant with him.. i read that hiccups are caused when the brain sends mixed signals (i.e. your brain tells you to yawn and swallow at the same time).

check out the link to see what i'm talking about...

is because they start parcticing breathing in the womb and inhale amniotic fluid...it's very normal for them to get hiccups and I read is no uncomfortable for them at all. I also read that baies can get hiccups when you eat spicy food...at that point they have tastebuds and can taste the food you eat in the amniotic fluid...when they inhale it that causes hiccups too.

The same reason people get hiccups. But I don't know the answer to that either.

I remember with my daughter how funny it feels.

Hapy baby!

Whatever the mom gets, the baby gets. Your intake of gassy foods is what's going on. Please be kind to the kid by priving yourself of those things which affect the baby. Gas is natural in your condition. Don't help it along by eating what's bad for you both
