i think what he means is that young children are impressionable, so if they are taught about god before they are five, they will generally believe in god for life. this doesnt happen in all cases, of course, but i've found it true with a lot of people. i dont think the priest meant it to be anything sexual.

No, not heard this, but sounds about right! Mind you I managed to get away!! No offence intended.. Oooh just read some of the other comments....I didn't take this statement to mean anything sexual, but do feel that if you are hooked into a religion (any), by the age of five, it's gonna be hard to shake it off and form your own ideas, especially Catholic religion where much is based on guilt and sin.

This can be said of any strong teaching because a child is basically formed by the time they are five.

This is a misquotation. It actually went "Give me a child before he is five and I'll be done for life"

I have not heard that, but i have heard this:

What's the difference between acne and a catholic priest?
Acne waits until your a teenager before it comes all over your face.

Good huh?! Bahahaha... and yes, before you ask, I am a Catholic, just not a very good one.

May i just say, i love the way no one can spell paedophilia! way to go US schooling!! wooooooot!

Teach a child when they are young is advised by anyone, not just the Catholic church, so please do not distort this with sexual thinking. It's purely education about God, giving a child to God, teaching him about who God is, how to pray, and live as a Christian.

Not heard, but sounds credible.. the innocence coupled with quality-trust unique to the age, really affords such possibility !

I'm pretty sure the Jesuits had that as more or less their slogan, although I thought it was age seven.
And yes, it means they'll be Catholic for life, not sexual playthings.

I heard something close to this. I think it has to do with capturing a child's beliefs before he is no longer innocent, or something similar.

Sounds like he was from Boston...the priests tend to like to get hold of 5 year olds there, or so I've heard.
