It is my first job in the City of London and the colleague is in a support function.

It would depend on what you can afford, how well you knew the individual and really how much you want to give.

Depends on the relationship you and others have with the individual. Ask someone you have befriended what they have given in the past. Usually in my office it depends on what our total goal is going to be for the gift and the number of people who contribute. The most I have ever had to do was $5 to be honest and I was on the high end just ask others close to you at work and get a feel. Hope this helps.

I base it on three things:
1) How did they function in relevance to my job
2) Were we personal friends
3) How many people in the office are contributing also

In a support function, I'd probably give 10 dollars (not sure what the British equivalent is though)

I've noticed that it depends on their income, but customs may vary from place to place. I've seen folks donate from 5 to 50 or more dollars US, all for the same function.
