The US has a problem with gun laws, recently there was a debate on whether gun law becomes abolished because of the increasing incidents and shootings (in schools etc) which took place in the last couple of years.
On the other hand gun laws provide protection if the weapon is used purely for self defence and when the defending party is at risk of losing his life (example is being attacked with a knife), protection is given also on the basis and proof that the person using the weapon had to do so to protect his private property (example house break ins).
Gun Laws do not provide any protection for people who use guns in cases where they could have done without them.
On the other hand if you are in your own property and are being attacked and you own a gun with licence to keep / or licence to carry then you will be able to use your weapon. You might still be charged and court trialed, however if you had your reason and 100% proof that you used the weapon to defend yourself, then the charges will be dropped or withdrawn,

it's written into there constitution 'the right to bare arms', the principles written into that document are extremely hard to change/ repeal (mainly due to the way the american legal and government systems run). The US has tried on many occassions to amend this but they can't get it though or voted for.
the UK doesn't have a written constitution and it's the law that governs us, can you see the government passing an act of parliament making it possible to shoot people!? - although saying that some laws provide for an interpritation of 'shooting someone was a reasonable force to prevent injuy to yourself.... ie. do you wait to be shot before you pull the trigger on someone pointing a gun at you?

Hopefully soon, for the sake of the people in the UK. You are quite an ignorant person though. You cannot legally shoot anyone here in the U.S.A. unless your own life is about to be taken. Self defense you know. There is nothing wrong with defending your own life, or the lives of your family. If the government sees something wrong with the right of the people to defend themselves, it is time for a new government.

Never!
... and if the UK did have US-style gun laws there is still the fear of arrest as shooting someone is just as illegal in the US. Remember many US states don't imprison you for murder - they electrocute or kill via lethal injection.
The best way to resolve a problem is NEVER with a gun. Only Governments do that.
Real people resolve their differences in a more positive way. If your intended victim has commited a crime - report them and let the authorities deal with it.

A disappointingly ill informed "question".
The U.S. is probably not ready for a dictatorship, and we threw out a monarchy. The reason for the second amendment to The Constitution was to prevent dictatorship, for which there are lots of willing candidates.
Anybody in the U.S. serious about reducing the number of fatal assaults would do well to campaign against driving automobiles. One fatality ever 5 minutes, approx. 10% intentional. There is the real violence in the U.S.

Excellent question. I notice that alot of other answers claim increased gun crime in the United States. BUT, what about massively decreased violent crime, exlcuding gun crime. Fewer muggings, fewer robbings, fewer murders. Self-defence is a God-given right, and we should use it. I hope the government of the UK wakes up and reads the statistics someday.

Although many pro-gun supporters will tell you that guns REDUCE crime and I absolutely believe that everyone has the right to defend themselves, would you really feel safe walking down the street knowing that everyone had the power to kill you with just a finger movement?

The US constitution allowed the possession of guns to enable the people to defend themselves against British invasion. This time has passed and they haven't revoked that right.
I am in the armed forces and we have rules of engagement so that we couldn't just going round shooting people - even if we were morons like you.
