It depends on the circumstances.. There isnt a compensation calculator that lawyers use. It depends on how, how much is permanent, who the victim is, and a lot more things. Call a lawyer and get a free consultation on this one.

Depends upon the damage to the finger. Index is a 'major finger'. Was an accident report filed with the company? It doesn't matter if it was negligence on their part, if you are permanently injured IE: numbness, then you should be compensated.
Loosing a fingernail bed on the right hand pinkie, awarded my husband $7000.00 and medical bills paid in 1999. Index finger is more useful and if you can't feel it due to numbness and it bothers you, you may get a better award.

Sorry to hear about your injury.

To reply to your question, it depends on so many factors that I would get yourself some legal advice.

In the UK, providing the injury did not happen more than 3 years ago, you can go to an injury lawyer for a no-win-no-fee arrangement (look in yellow pages) OR talk to your Union if you have one, as they will have solicitors that they use for such claims.

You no longer pick your nose. That may be a good thing or a bad thing depending on whether you are a finger, a nose or a mouth.

Did you report it to RIDDOR (if you're in the UK)? Make sure the accident was reported otherwise you won't get a penny.

It depends if there is permanent damage or not. Did you do it recently?
