Hi, I was wondering should I still be feeding my son on a feed on demand still? Hes eating every 2 hours any where from 1 oz to 6 oz depending on his last feeding. Please help.

You should probably feed on demand, but asses why your baby is wanting to feed so much. He is probably going through a growth spurt. When babies go through growth spurts they eat alot more because they are trying to increase your milk supply in the breast even though they are not breast feeding because it is hardwired into them to do so. My baby at 3-4 weeks was eating 4-6 ounces and then id feed her an hour later even more and she would just vomit it up and i was told that is because they are going through a growth spurt, and to stop the unessesary feedings you can give him a soother which will be much easier on you. Mabye give your baby 2-4 ounces every 3-4 hours and give a soother for inbetween feedings, if the baby rejects the soother and is still rooting and sucking his hands then feed him another ounce because he could be hungry. I know this has to do with growth spurts because my daughter who is seven weeks went from eating 4-6 oz and beyond to eating 2 -3 oz most of the time and an occasional 4 ounces. So I hope these suggestions help and good luck.

If you are breastfeeding, yes you continue to feed on demand. Breastmilk digests faster than formula so they need more sooner when breastfeeding.

If on formula, you still need to respond to his demands of being hungry, but sometimes it can be gas. He may need to be burped again. I'm suspicious of the 1 ounce feeding. That doesn't sound like he was hungry at all. sounds more like gas.

It's hard to get some babies on a schedule. Just make your bottles a little bigger than you think he will take and see how much he actually drinks.

Sometimes you have to take a break in order to finish the whole bottle. Burping is key. If you have a bottle or nipple that isn't right for the baby, it will have more gas. They will behave like they are full, but as soon as they burp, they will be hungry again.

Best of luck.

I fed my baby on demand and, looking back at his feed charts - he was having between 34-36ozs per day @ 4weeks - this was every 2 hours. He soon settled down. He slept through the night @ 9weeks, and now @ 5months has 5 bottles and consumes only 28ozs per day. Babies really will eat what that need when they need!

Yes. You should feed on demand for the next few months.

You can also try to keep him awake by touching his feet, undressing him and blowing air on his head. Soon he will become more alert. If he's making wet diapers and gaining weight, then he's getting enough food and there's no need to worry. You should also check with a doctor.

Girl, you would be hungry too if all you got was some milk! Hell yeah! He's a growing baby so let him eat. He'll let you know if he's done eating, or if he's not hungry. As long as you keep a schedule he won't be hungry or starving.

if he's demanding you should be feeding. it will work that way clear through. Eventually he wont be hungry so often, and you'll learn a bored cry from a hungry one and know that he's been fed and not hungry.

yep keep going........
every 2-3 hours for breastfeeding.........
and every 3-4 hours for formula feeding.....
that's all you need to do until they are 6 months of age to start on cereal and solid foods.

u cannot monitor your baby's feed so soon. it is given on demand. their stomach is so small that they cannot have more . so, they need in little quantities at short intervals.your baby is the master now.he knows what is best for him.
