Hey there...
Whenever you install a program onto your computer, Windows will 'throw' these files onto your hard drive in no particular order. So, when you click on a program to open, Windows must search your hard drive and gather all the files the program needs to work and puts those files back together again. This is time consuming. What Disk Defragment does is it finds the program files that belong together and moves them as close together as possible. That way Windows can find the files needed very much quicker, therefore making the program open quicker and run smoother. That's what Defragging does. Everyone thinks, as soon as ANYTHING goes wrong with their computer that they should Defrag to fix it. But what I've described above IS what it does and that's it... However, you sound like a perfect candidate for defrag... :-) before you defrag though, do ERROR CHECKING first with BOTH boxes checked, then do your defrag... If things are still slow after that, then take the steps neccesary to remove any spyware, etc from your computer, which since things are slow you'll probally need to find a good registry cleaner to really fix your problem and get your programs back to normal operation. Error check & Defrag should be your first steps though, along with disk cleanup (especially temp files) good luck :-)
