Each formula has it's pluses. What you need to do is buy a small amount of whichever one you wish to try and see how well your child tolerates it. For a while, my son did well on Enfamil Lipil. Then, all of a sudden, he was constantly spitting it up. We tried Similac and Nestle Good Start also (he did better on NGS). Finally, we have tried a store brand at our local grocery store. He does great on it, spits up very little and it's much cheaper than the name brands.
Point is, you will just have to see how your child does with whatever you decide, and be ready to switch if you need to.

Enfamil and Similac are good if you like expensive formula.
When my 2nd child came along I asked the doctor if there was a cheaper alternative that was good, she suggested the WalMart brand formula. It worked great and when you read the label it has everything in it the expensive ones do.
Enfamil powdered formula - $20-25 for a can
Similac powdered formula - $20-30 for a can
WalMart Brand - $12-14 for a big can.
I prefer the powdered stuff because it can be served at room temperature at a moment's notice, just add water and shake it up good. There's nothing to refridgerate and then warm up and it travels nicely where ever you go.
Goodluck!

Considering your child's age, I'd recommend Nestle [formerly Carnation] Good Start Supreme with DHA and ARA. My daughter drank Enfamil Lipil with Iron when she was very small, because I was more familiar with it before having a baby, and also had Enfamil Lipil A.R. when she was spitting up a good bit, but I finally settled on Good Start with her, and was very pleased with it. It was a smoother consistency, I thought, and better tasting. Yes! While it's nasty-tasting [from an adult's perspective], you should give it a taste - after all, your child's eating it. Definitely go with the varieties that have DHA and ARA, for baby's brain, and get a small can for starters and see what your baby likes. S/He may have an entirely different taste preference in formula, but the DHA and ARA are important for his/her brain development. Also, try the store brands, but compare labels - they're very often the same makeup, but just a lot less, without all the fancy marketing.

I like Enfamil Gentlease (it's lower lactose). Similac is awful, it clumps & foams no matter how carefully you mix it. Do you have the kind of job where you can pump on your lunch break? I did it for a year with my 2nd baby, and I'm doing that now with my 3rd.
In any case, you should give the baby 3parts breastmilk to 1 part formula, then increase it to half formula after a week or so, and so on until you get to all formula. If you jump to straight formula, baby will have a terrible belly ache while he/she adjusts.

I'm using Carnation Healthy Start with my son, now 4 months old. He was on Enfamil but developed really bad gas so our pediatrician recommended we switch. When you compare labels, there's really not much difference between all of the formulas. You just need to find the one that works for your baby.
And don't let the nipple Nazis get to you. There are many reasons why you might wish to switch your baby to formula. The decision to breast feed or use formula is yours alone!

I would talk to his pediatrician. But you can go with the good ol' Enfamil with Lipil and Iron, or you can go with Prosobee(it's soy milk). But remember, sometimes your baby won't take so well with certain formulas, so monitor your baby. When I took my baby off the breast and formula, it was a nightmare! She was a premie so I put her on NeoSure and that made her constipated so she was on Nutramigen for a while because it was hypoallergenic and it was easily digested. I put her on ProSobee and it didn't work, and when she got near 1, She was on Nutramigen and then to Enfamil Lipil with iron. But since he's 6 months u can put him on regular Enfamil Lipil with iron and then he can start drinking juices, and eating certain baby foods if you haven't introduced him or her already.

Enfamil A+
I nursed for as long as I could with all of my children but when they were too young for Homogenized milk I used this formula. It was easily digested, they rarely spit up and all my kids are happy, healthy and SMART! I swear by the DHA and Omega 3

I used Enfamil Lipil. She had trouble with gas, so one of the lactose free ones or the soy formula works.
