How many white christmases have there been in Ireland? The prevailing global warming topic made me think we might never have another white or even frosty christmas.

Although, for political reasons, we never hear about them, the benefits of global warming seem to outweigh the disadvantages.

There are so many vested interests in the doom and gloom scenarios of so-called climate change that we should take them all with a pinch of salt. Although they are mainly based on unproven speculation and pseudo science, they are presented as though they are irrefutable fact.

This is clearly dishonest. It should be admitted that we do not really know, and that it is by no means certain that the effects of global warming (if it exists) will be more negative than positive. It is most likely to be a case of 'swings and roundabouts' i.e. benefits for some nations, with some disadvantages for others. For example there are many largely unpopulated areas where the climate is too cold at present, these could become much more temperate, and able to support a much larger population, and also able to produce better crops. In addition an increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is known to increase the quality and speed of plant growth. Which should benefit everyone and actually act as a counterbalance which should limit the severity of climate change, helping to reduce extremes of climate.

We are not told such things because, climate change has become a very lucrative industry, a political bandwagon and a golden goose which gives governments an almost endless source of new taxes, limited only by the limits of their own imaginations. What is more, they can proudly claim these exorbitant taxes are all for our own benefit, and we should be good little citizens and welcome them.

Well, if global warming models are accurate, you may get colder in Ireland, because the raised temperatures may shut off the gulf stream, so a hotter equator may not send the gulf stream anymore to warm you up.

By the way, man IS the cause of global warming. Here is the evidence:

CO2 is 30% higher than it has been for 650,000 years. Methane is 130% greater. These are two of the main pollutants humans put into the atmosphere in excess, and they are two of the primary greenhouse gases.

Look at the 'hockeystick', which shows a dramatic warming since 1950 after a fairly stable climate for 1000 years. In fact, the 10 hottest years in recorded history have all happened since 1990, with 2005 being the hottest, and 2006 is shaping up to maybe break that record.
(see links below)

How's that for proof of man's fault in this? There is ample proof, any real scientist will tell you that.

There has NEVER been an article doubting man's influence on global warming published in a peer-reviewed journal. A recent study of almost 1000 proved that.

Yes, the earth naturally heats and cools, but the rate and amount we are warming now is unprecedented in the recent geologic past. We are doing this, and we must stop it. This is not some political statement or rhetoric. This is science trying to educate a crass, ignorant public of the damage they are doing. The magnitude of temperature increase ALREADY is about 10x that of the 'little ice age' of the middle ages, and rate and amount are only going up.

Just to be clear, glacial and interglacial cycles are mainly controlled by astronomical fluctuations, but we have a detailed record of the last 7 cycles, and what the climate and CO2 is doing now is way different and extreme. The rate of increase is much higher than in the past AND the value itself is much higher.

Yes, global warming is a threat to almost everywhere in the world... The polar ice caps are melting, the ozone layer is weakening and all round the effects are negative. All because our lifestyle which is based on the burning of fossil fuels. Seas have already risen and will continue to if ice caps will keep melting as they are now... If the ozone layer hole spreads it will be very harmful to humans causing ultra violet radiation which leads to skin cancer... But at the same time, we are cutting down the rainforest which is 'the plannets lungs' plants absob carbon dioxide and excrete oxygen, reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere... Burning thse trees releses the CO2 that the trees have absobed, adding more CO2 to the atmosphere... So not only will Ireland be short of snow the all round effects aren't looking good. Unless we change our ways, but in 40 years, if we keep up the pace of fossil fuel consumption they will run out and we will be forced to find alternatives.. My guess is hydrogen!

White Christmasses might not be over - one possible long-term effect of global warming is that the Gulf Stream, which gives us our relatively temperate climate, could shift - which means we would have a similar climate to Norway, ie paradoxically we could get colder because of global warming. It's not definite though.

That is true. White christmases are over. But you will still have plenty of booze to have a wet Christmas.

Man Made Global warming is a CROCK.

Well according to the research the biggest producer of methane (a greenhouse gas) are cows .. which have been bred on mass for food so even that one is our fault. We're all going to have to get off our butts and do something sooner or later as it would be a shame to lose all of our progress as the human race through avarice.

Being from South Dakota and having moved to Southern California, I can say that white Christmas' are not all their cracked up to be. Man caused Global warming is a crock, or at least its exaggerated consequences are. It is political nonsense rapped up in pseudoscience. Alice should read more science and less propaganda.
