Curves is a place for women, only, to exercise to modern music and make friends and have a good time doing it. Why don't you go into one and check it out.

It is a gym that specializes in 30 minutes workouts geared toward the muscle systems of women. They have studied what excercies are most effective, and use specialized equipment.
Another reason it's "just for women" is it's meant to be a supportive structure for women looking to lose weight and get in shape. It's believed that being in a group of like minded females will give participants extra confidence and stamina.
Legally, they probably can't refuse a man from joining, but health wise, since everything is geared more toward women, you'd probably get better results at a standard gym.

Curves is a womens gym, that has 10-20 stations that you work out on for about a mintue, then switch. It has almost no weights generally and a few tread mills. The reason it is women only is so women feel comfortable working out in front of people. At a general gym you can feel judged and selfconcious, this way it is only women and they can just worry about working out.

I imagine men could join if they really wanted to. The thing is, Curves is kind of crappy. It's a workout regime where you stop at numerous stations for I think about 30 seconds at a time. So you hop up and down for 30 seconds, then move over and do seated rows on a machine for 30 seconds, then jump up and down for another 30, then move to a machine to do leg presses for 30 and so on at about 12 different stations.
It's not enough of a workout to get a normal person's heart rate up and sustain it in order to burn fat. It's very, very easy. The machines don't use weights and have very little resistance. Supposedly, the harder you push on them, the more resistance there is, but that's not really true. There's no emphasis on good form, no instruction on how to burn calories or keep your heart rate up, and no discussion of working muscles to fatigue (which you probably know is necessary to put on lean muscle mass).
The ease of the workout appeals to out of shape women who don't want to work very hard. Yes, it's better and more beneficial than sitting on the sofa. No, it's not a real workout.

I believe the Curves gym is only for women because it allows women to work on their bodies and fellowship with one another in a male free zone. I guess it is to take some of the stress off of women when they are in a normal gym atmosphere.

It is a 30-minute fitness concept combined strength training and sustained cardiovascular activity through safe and effective hydraulic resistance. The reason why it is strictly for women is to give women a place where they feel comfortable while working out.

It is just for women because a women who is trying to lose weight is likely to be self conscious about her body. At a gym where there are no men she will hopefully feel more comfortable.
