WHO DIAGNOSED THIS? HIS GRADE SCHOOL TEACHER? THIS IS A POPULAR IMAGINARY DISEASE. MEDICATIONS ARE STRONG & NOT NECESSARY.

I would like to congratulate you on your commitment to helping your son with this challenging condition. It is important to recognize that no drug (herbal or prescription) actually treats the 'cause' of ADHD/ADD. Recently the common prescription drugs such as Ritalin were given "Black Box" warning status by the FDA. Black box warnings are the highest level of 'danger' warnings given to a drug, short of removing it from the marketplace. So, given that these drugs are dangerous and do not treat/cure the cause of behavior disorders (4), you would be wise to seek professional guidance that will work with you and your son to find the cause of his problems.

Scientific research has shown many nutritional and environmental factors may be involved in ADHD. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies, essential fatty acid deficiencies (4), heavy metal toxicities, intestinal problems such as dysbiosis (abnormal growth of bacteria in the gut) or 'leaky gut syndrome' (intestinal hyperpermeability), food allergies, and amino acid deficiencies are a few examples (1).

In 2005, researchers at Ohio State University reported on several studies showing Zinc deficiency is common in this condition and that zinc supplementation has been shown to be helpful in two clinical trials (2). Note, 73% of Americans do not consume the RDA level of zinc.

"Scientific evidence suggests that individualized dietary management may be effective in some children." "Trace element supplementation also may be beneficial when specific deficiencies are present." And, regarding 'alternative approaches' to treatment that I am discussing here, "if the primary care provider is not comfortable or knowlegeable about an acceptable method, referral to capable and responsible practitioners in the community who are experienced in these areas should be considered." These quotes are directly from reference #3 below.

You will need to find a good Naturopathic Physician, Chiropractor, Certified Clinical Nutritionist (CCN), or Medical Doctor that specializes in functional medicine* or environmental medicine to help you and your son with these possible issues. Finding the cause or causes of your son's problem will take time and effort, but will be very rewarding for him in the long run.

* you can find a referral list of doctors trained in functional medicine at the website for "The Institute of Functional Medicine" - just use your search engine by entering that name.

Best wishes and good luck.

My friend has a son so diagnosed. She refused to give him meds and dealt with the matter purely on a dietary level. It was a lot of work for her to find out the information. But they made it through elementary school and high school without meds. Try seeing a naturopath.

Feed him eggs in the morn. It has been found that it contains a lot of the same ingredients as Ritalin!!! Good luck
