when you see women/girls doing this it shows that they are insecure and self-conscious. the folding of the arms is an example of what is called 'closed body language'
as if to say, 'dont approach me'
also if a woman/girl sits next to you and crosses her legs, if they are crossed towards you its an open posture meaning she likes you or at least does not feel uncomfortable and vice versa.

Interesting question.
I see more younger girls doing this than woman and it looks like (If I may take a swing at guessing here) that younger women are still developing into their emotions which seems to be a lot more sensitive and complicated than the emotions of an older woman or guy.
It looks like they can feel everything and don't know how to control it yet. Everything can hurt 10 times as worse or 10 times as pleasurable.
Being a man of course and not really understanding. There is something sexy about a woman that walks about with her arms folded with a look on her face that suggests that she is lost in the thoughts of deep musing.
But I'm a guy I can only guess.
Thanks for the two points!

Usually having one's arms folded across the chest indicates that you don't like who you're talking to. It's defensive body language. Both women and men do it so I personally don't think it has much to do with chest size.

Although it is not safe to say women who walk with their arms folded across their chest is always a sign of insecurity, it may be in some cases. I've also notice that some girls in highschool and colleges hold their notebooks up to their chests. I agree it might be an unconscious defense mechinism, it is a vulnerable area and is natural to protect vulnerable areas. This question is talking about girls walking and not gerenal arm folding in conversation.
On the topic of arm crossing in conversation... This is a negative or defensive position. Most people will assume this position if they disagree with what they are hearing.
Even if someone is agreeing with you, if their arms are crossed they will have a negative attitude towards you.
At this point it is best to attempt to find out what it is that they are not in agreement with you on, or force them out of their stance by asking them to eg write something down.
Their negative attitude will continue until they have uncrossed their arms, once they have done this you will have a better chance of bringing them round to your point of view.

i don't think this is true, that more females walk with their arms folded than men.
but it could be for a number of reasons that they're folding their arms. it could be for warmth, it could be a form of posturing, it could be attitude, it could simply because there's no other place to put their hands. it could just be comfortable.

Arm-folding is closed body language. Men typically do the social outward going, so I would just chalk up the increased arm-folding with increased volume of attention.

Because men can get away with walking around with their hands in their pockets and women would look butch if they did that andthere is nowhere else to put them! Plus it is meant to be a sign. Body language. Could mean they dont like you, or, they are insecure

3 reasons.....
If i see a man looking at my boobs i get paranoid and annoyed because he's perving and do it out of protest.
If i'm cold...
or my body language says 'stay away, keep your distance, i'm not sure about you.
