I believe it was designed to limit the possibilities for political tensions between government representatives. Say an individaul does not know all the laws and breaks one? Or perhaps there exists an unjust law? I agree. Diplomatic immunity should be thrown out. However, the original intention was good.

Diplomatic Immunity is a two way street that protects our overseas diplomats from coercion while posted abroad and vice versa. I

t is not however a get out of jail free card for everyone. In the case of serious crimes countries can voluntarily give up immunity for their diplomats and some have. The US state Department has to request it and because they don't like to rock the boat often times they wont.

In the case you mentioned the diplomat was probably declared prosana non grata and forced back to the UAE and barred forever from entering the US.

The gentleman who referred to our diplomats has the key. We want our diplomats to be protected, and so does every other country. Without these protections, negotiations between countries would never work.

If a diplomat does something that is really bad, murder, rape, etc, we can petition the diplomat's government to waive his or her immunity. Sometimes the foreign government will do this. If the government does not the diplomat can be declared a "Persona non Grata" and given a deadline (usually 24 to 48 hours to leave the country.

I agree. Considering the realities of the world, however, diplomatic immunity is an unfortunate but necessary evil that protects our own diplomats while performing their duties in foreign countries. There just isn't any way around it, sad to say.

Because it protects *our* diplomats from being arrested and prosecuted in other countries. Without mutual treaties for diplomatic immunity, American diplomats in other countries could be arrested for anything (whether they had done it or not). They could be jailed without what we consider a "fair trial," and spend their whole lives in prison. Yes, that means that sometimes we have to let people go who do bad things here, but overall it's a reasonable compromise to protect our own diplomats.
