I rented a log cabin (Dow & Duggan log home) a few years ago...the charm of the open concept & the log walls couldn't be matched...it was beautiful. The one huge problem that many folks may not realize is the SMELL of the treated logs & I've been in several log homes (even the ones people built themselves from thier own logs) the odor of the preservatives stays in the dwelling...it never goes away. I'd strongly recommend that folks check out log homes BEFORE you invest in one.
Oh yeah...I forgot to mention the ants...they are a big problem (even in the treated logs)...personally I'd purchase or build a small conventional cottage.

I was born in a log cabin........my parent were nature lovers and decided the best to bring me into this world was going to be in the mountains of Colorado. Now, of course I dont remember much, but I do have pictures. We did not have electricity.......or plumbing. We had homemade candles, an outhouse, and a creek to bathe in. I think we did this for for 4 years.
It never got old,according to my parents.
My dad is now a geologist and still craves the log cabin.
Sounds very "little house on the prarie"........I guess it was.
