Open the laptop and clean all the dust off the CPU + fan. If you search google you should be able to find a guide on how to open up your laptop depending on what model it is and who makes it. After you open the laptop use compressed air to blast away all the dust. In addition, it would help if you didn't put your laptop on fabric (your bed, couch, a pillow) because fabric blocks all the holes in the bottom of your laptop.

First check your battery for recalls, but then look at where you are using it. My kids both have the bad habit of sitting a laptop on their bed. Since it is on a soft, naturally insulating surface, no heat can dissipate and any vents are usually blocked by the bedding (even using your "laptop" on your lap will do this to some extent). If you need to work like this, get a hard board slightly larger than the laptop to sit it on. If it still overheats, or you are using it on a desk, I like the Targus podium coolpad (this is what I use, but there are others that work just as well, or you could build your own). It doesn't actually have cooling coils or fans, it just elevates the back end, which allows extra airflow underneath, and also tilts the keyboard to make it easier to type. The amount of tilt is adjustable with spacers, and it also has a turntable to allow it to swivel around. It works quite well with my dell 9300, which generates more heat than a space heater, even with a non-recalled battery.

There have been a number of laptop battery recalls. Check with your manufacturer to see if your unit could be effected. The batteries have been overheating and even causing meltdowns.
