how'd people drill a well before well drilling rigs came along?

a water hose and conduit...you sink a eight foot length in the ground a couple of feet and place the hose inside the top of the conduit. Turn water on. The water will wash away the soil and debris and actually sink the pipe. When it gets low remove the hose and screw on another eight footer or shorter if the top can't be reached. Place hose in top again. Continue to do so until you hit water. Works like a charm.

Whats dill?

They do use some modern equipment, they just are very choosy as to what.

You don't dill wells, you dill pickles. They are not against hiring it done. They don't make their own pumps,sinks,lumber and nails. They purchase them.

By hand.With tolls such as shovels and a pick axe.
