Vx X b X 1 + q(x) X dx X 1 = (Vx + dvx / dx X dx) X b X 1

the symbols mean:
Vx Inflow
b Saturated thickness
q(x) Vertical recharge of water table
dx Length

I am presuming that the 1s can be removed because anything multiplied by one wont change

You do not need to worry yourself with the meaning of all the symbols, thats for me to understand, i just need a little help with actually doing the equation.

Up until now i never realised that there was a practical use for differential equations.

If anyone could help me it would be most appretiated.

If this is a differential equation, do you really want it differentiated, or are you looking for a solution to the equation.

If the latter then you will need to write it out so that the differential terms are clearly different from the non-differential terms. 'dx' as length for instance makes the whole thing pretty confusing.

Since you have a term in Vx.b.1 on both sides of the equation it seems to simplify down to

q(x).dx = (dvx/dx.dx).b

differentiate with respect to WHAT? V? b? q? x? you need to know that before you can even attempt an answer. SInce the symbols are "for you to understand" perhaps you should try DOING that before asking an incomplete question.
