To the best of my knowledge, B of A is a Chexsystems bank. This does not have to do with negotiating a check at the bank; this means whenever a person visits a bank to open a new deposit account (checking or savings) the bank "runs" the person through Chexsystems. The purpose of Chexsystems is to evaluate a person's worthiness to open a new account at a bank. Chexsystems will tell the bank if the customer has negative or derogatory activity with another bank. A person most commonly has a Chexsystems record if they have ever overdrawn their account and never paid it back or took too long to pay it back, or they have misused their debit card.

If you feel you may have a Chexsystems record, or you know you do, check with your local bank or credit union to find out if there are options for individuals who have a record on Chexsystems. Many banks have "second chance" accounts. Good luck!
