Girls in Thailand start a family very young and want at least two or three kids. Why? So that they will be looked after when they are old.
Here traditionally, the young look after the old. It's a sort of insurance against hardship in old age.

I think that younger people taking care of the elderly is perfect. They have the opportunity to appreciate how wonderful ageing really is. In our society anything that is no longer deemed useful is discarded. Since elderly are less productive they are carted off to shabby nursing homes to serve out the rest of their time. Aging is inevitable so if we embrace it and appreciate it we will no longer fear that nor fear dying and a lot of screwed up people can start enjoying their time to the fullest instead of obsessing over every wrinkle and gray hair. Granted the plastic surgeons will suffer but who cares.

Good question! I personally believe life without a nanny state would be good in some respects as in maybe it would encourage certain people to take care of them selves more like the unemployed! But on the other hand is it so bad that we have a state that cares SO much about us??? That was sarcasm by the way! I believe we don't have a nanny state but a state that pretends to care about us! For example smokers are encouraged to stop smoking with smoking bans and messages on the packets yet without people buying ciggies the NHS would collapse even more as it needs the tax!! We live in a capitalist society and that means no room for a nanny state!!

I don't think you understand the meaning of "nanny state". It's nothing to do with looking after people in their old age. It's about the government and Councils controlling people's lives by telling them how to live.

It is a bad thing because it stresses people out when they have no control or choice over their own lives.

He who governs least, governs best. Society is what matters not government. The majority are good people and are in it together, thus the nanny state is a bad thing, interfering and encouraging a degree of reliance on them, aiding the breakdown of relaltionships within the community which are based on mutual co operation and creating a nation dpendant on the government instead of dependant on ourselves and ourselves alone.

I believe having the children looking after parents in old age is a splendid idea. However, in American society we have encouraged an individualist ideology. This is not to say this is a negative thing, it simply means such a system is impractical in a society such as America.
