Physical punishment should be used very rarely and only when the child has placed himself or someone else in danger of physical harm. For example: when my granddaughter was very young, I took her to a bathroom in a rest park. and told her to wait in the bathroom while I went to the bathroom While I was in the bathroom, a woman opened the door and my granddaugher went out and started to talk to a man. I hit her on her leg 1 time. and told her never to do this again. This was the 1st and only time I ever hit her. She never again left a public restroom w/o either me or her month w her. ACCEPTABLE; (1) talk to the child (2) If the child misbehaves in public, take the child home (3) take away priveleges.(4) send the child to his room UNACCEPTABLE (1) beating the child (2) calling the child names like "stupid" (3) hurting the child's pet. (4) withholding food (not deserts) (5) locking the child in a closet (6)withholding your love when the child says "I'm soory.

for children?
I don't believe in hitting unless the child has done something really dangerous like running into the street. Then only three swats.
For my daughter I took away cartoons when she was very young and you would have thought I did beat her. She hated this so much.
Grounding from a favorite game or tv or activities worked well to.
The most important thing is consistancy if you are going to punish for talking back you should punish everytime the kid talks back. Its hard work to dicipline a child but its results are worth it. The child should know that last time he did something you didn't approve of he got punished. If you aren't consistant the child will constantly test you to see if he will get away with it this time. Kids need to know their limits. I think they are happier. My girl is well adjusted and just yesterday she told me how much she hated it when I took away her cartoons She is 20 now.

You might want to elaborate on that. Do you mean punishment for children, criminals, etc? And unacceptable to me personally, or in society?

With children nothing physical should ever happen. Time outs for a child with a min for every year. For example a four year old would get a four minute time out.
