San Diego State University is a fourth tier university that is not particularly selective. It has one thing, and one thing only, going for it -- it is in one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

In general, the universities in the California State University system pale in comparison to those in the University of California system. If you really want to be in San Diego, go to UCSD.

If you want a good engineering degree -- and can't get into Cal Tech, MIT, Stanford, UC-Berkeley or Georgia Tech -- then you should think about going to the middle of the country. All eleven of the schools in the Big Ten have incredibly good engineering programs. By that -- I mean that they are almost as good as places like MIT and Cal Tech and a hell of a lot better than places like SD State. Sure, the winters are cold in Minnesota and Wisconsin -- but the engineering education is first rate and the cities are very livable. And your chances of getting into at least one of them is probably good.
