What software have you got for burning? Is it Nero or Roxio, or one of the cheap crappy ones like Sonic. Windows does have a burning capability, but it's very poor and extremely hit-and-miss. An install of Nero would sort it all out for you, always assuming you do actually have a CD burner drive.

As others have already stated, Marilyn, you need to confirm that you do have a CD burner and not just a CD-ROM fitted to your system. To do this, follow this:
Click on 'Start' at the bottom left of your screen.
Click on 'Control Panel' and then switch to Classic View (top left of the screen).
Double-click on 'System'.
Click on 'Hardware' tab
Click on 'Device Manager'
Next to where it says DVD/CD-ROM adapters, click on the '+' sign.
It will now display the name of your CD-ROM or CD-R/RW drive.
If it does say CD-R/RW, you've confirmed that you've got a writer. What you need now is a writing (burning) application. There are many available ... some that you have to pay for, and some that are free. One of the most popular writing (burning) programs is Nero. (That's one that has to be paid for ... unless you know how to find serial numbers.)
There are some freeware ones on the following page.
If you need any further help, don't hesitate to send me an email.

Disc drive behaves strangely or does not show up on PC
If an optical disc (CD or DVD) drive works well for a while but then the icon disappears or starts behaving strangely, there may be a conflict. Try one or more of the following to resolve this issue:
Update Windows and the optical drive driver program by downloading and installing updates and service packs using Microsoft Windows Update tool.
Make sure the optical drive appears in BIOS Setup screen. The BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) needs to be able to detect the drive before Windows can detect it. To check the BIOS Setup:
Restart the PC and as soon as the first logo screen appears, press the F1 key.
When the BIOS Setup screen appears, use the arrow keys to go to the Main menu, if not already selected.
Check for the hardware-identifying name for the optical drive next to Secondary Master, Secondary Slave, or Primary Slave.
If the name of the optical drive does not appear, check the cable connections for the drive.
Remove Digital Audio and DMA capabilities for the optical drive. Digital Audio and DMA are different ways that a CD or DVD drive handle data. Some optical drives may not know how to use these functions. To disable Digital Auto and DMA:
Click Start, and then right-click My Computer.
Click Properties and then click the Hardware tab.
Click the Device Manager button.
Click the + (plus) sign next to DVD/CD-ROM.
Double-click the drive name to open the Properties window.
Click the Properties tab.
Remove the check mark from Enable digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device, and then click OK.
Close all open windows and restart the PC.
Check for problems with the IDE controller. IDE controllers handle the communication for hard disk drives and optical drives. To check for and fix problems:
Click Start, and then right-click My Computer.
Click Properties, and then click the Hardware tab.
Click the Device Manager button.
Click the + (plus) sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.
Check the listed controllers for an exclamation mark on a yellow triangle. If there are no exclamation marks, try the next option described below. If an exclamation mark appears:
Right-click the IDE Controller with the yellow triangle.
Click Remove or Uninstall.
Click OK.
Close the Device Manager and restart the PC.
Follow onscreen instructions to reinstall the IDE controller, if any instructions appear.
CD-RW (cd writer) drive test
Purpose of the test
To check that the CD-RW drive can:
Find and read files on a data CD.
Play music tracks on a music CD.
Write files to and read files from a blank, writeable CD-RW disc.
Time required
This test takes several minutes. The time varies, depending on the amount and type of data on each disc used for the test.
Before running the test
Make sure you are logged on as the owner or computer administrator.
Close all programs and turn off the screensaver.
Have the following discs ready: a CD-ROM disc with data files (not music tracks or sound files); a music CD with at least one music track; and a blank, writeable CD-RW disc. The test will tell you when to insert each disc into the CD-RW drive. The test will eject any incorrect disc.
Check the label on the front of the drive door to make sure you insert each disc into the drive that is being tested.
Note: To end the test at any time, click Cancel in the Diagnostic Progress window, not in the window that prompts you to insert a disc.
Click Run to start the test. If you do not want to run this test, click the Back arrow on the toolbar to go back to a previous window.
