Part II to my question is: Is i Pod the only portable player that can be used on a Mac?

Apple doesn't want to play ball with the other music software programs. So the answer to your question is none. You can either buy an iPod which will work only with iTunes on a Mac or PC, or virtually any other Mp3 player, which will work only on a PC but usually with a wide choice of programs.
