Jamaica's two major cellular providers have exceelnt coverage. However they are for the most part GSM netowrks with a very small percentage of the customer base of Cable and Wireless being TDMA users. Miphone a smaller company has CDMA technology. It depends on the type of phone you have and if you want to incur roaming charges. IF you have an unlocked GSM phone you can buy a SIM card at any C&W or Digicel Store and add credit as you need.

Wish I was going. When I went to Jamaica about 5 years ago, I also had 2 children under the age of 5 who were staying with the grandparents. Anyway, I was a customer of Cingular at the time and, even though several people told us that we weren't going to be able to use our cell phones, mine worked the whole time we were there. I am sure that 5 years later, the cell phone service has only improved. I suspect you could contact the resort where you are staying and find out for sure. There are lots of good Jamaica websites where you might find the answer as well.

In terms of the IT industry Jamaica is the Caribbeans leader,it even is rivaling some already develop nation in terms of cell phone penetration in the island, the, the country has three major cellular service provider, and there are plans under way to build 2 more fiber optic cable into the islands existing,Internet system, that would make its already fast system, be super.
As for wireless communication,it will be a breeze,do you have roaming? once you have the service from you net work provider it should be a breeze.Overall Jamaica has and excellent coverage in coverage of the island.( cable and wireless aka B free service, broader coverage in terms of capturing business market,Digital capturing the mass of people to be #1in terms of the size of the company. and the smaller Centennial aka,Mi phone),But automatically you will be connected to Cable and wireless because it is more compatible to its US counterparts.Do expect that in some mountainous areas of the country coverage will not be perfect, but when i was still living there, there a large expansion of it physical assets.

i've been surfing more than 3 hours today seeking the answers to the same question, and I haven't found any interesting debate like this. It's pretty worth enough for me.
