HP has been the best for me. They also haven't been hit by the "Sony battery recall." They can take quite a bit of punishment, are fairly priced and good performance. Plus, they are very stylish.

Acer is cheap and reliable. But i have friends who bought the white ASUS too; pay a little more though.
Anyway what tasks are you putting your laptop through? It is hard to answer if we do not know your needs.
HP is pretty good for playing media, Compaq & Acer is good-value-for-money,

its not a question of brand just dont buy the cheapes modle and make sure you get at least a 2 year warranty also ask how the warranty works do you have to call some 800# and talk to someone who dosnt speak english? do you have to pay to have it shipped ect.

1) leveno/ibm thinkpad, specially the T or Z series: these are like benz of laptop. very study, durable and powerful. price high!!
2) second choice is DELL or SONY either one is okay.
