The best board games are non-traditional(this means not monopoly). Many avid board gamers will list one of the following for favorite family board game:

Settlers of Catan

A simple google search will bring up plenty of info on any of these games.

Settlers of Catan from Mayfair Games. A simple building and trading game played on a board made up of hexagonal tiles. The tiles are placed together randomly before each game starts thus ensuring good replay value. Players trade resources, and build roads, settlements, and cities. The basic game is for 4 players and takes about an hour and a half or two hours (less if everyone is familiar with the rules or you modify the victory conditions).
