the original. NO QUESTION! Just notice how little gore there is, its all in your mind. you think you are seeing gallons of blood but there's hardly any. the film is a sustained piece of terror from start to finish. a real classic of cinema.

I only saw snippets of the original one. And, the movies made in the late 60's and the 70's turns out to be much scarier then the movies of today. That is where the directors get their inspiration from-the movies back then that scared them as a kid. I mean, Wes Craven's "The Last House on the Left"? If that was not a scary movie, I do not know where you are coming from. So, personally, there is smothing spooky about the old movies. I mean, hell, "Nosferatu", a a silent horror vampire movie from the 20's is scarier then some of the movies now. So, I would say that even though the latter one may be a little more bloodier then the original one, I would stick with the original one. It did have some black humor in it.

Original, without a doubt. The remake built up to the scary scenes too much, the original just got right in there which is why it seemed as if it was really happening.

The original was good, but i suppose being used to better effects etc i would say the remake.
The new movie Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning is the best by far - proper fierce!!

the original to me was much scarier and i think it is better. you have to think that it was 1973 when this movie was released in america. that was udderly shocking to many people because it was so bizzare. and now nothing can suprise us anymore with these new fangled horror pictures that don't have very many original ideas. the remake was good don't get me wrong, if it came down to it i would pick the original, it's original, scarier, and more suprising.

I agree. The original (and most horror originals in my opinion). There’s this realistic, chilling factor about them. I'm not sure what exactly it is, but something about the classic horrors make them so much scarier.

Definitely the original.
When I first watched it I had to turn it off several times during the chase through the trees at the end.
The suspense was making my heart pound. I must have been 17 or 18 at the time, but it seriously scared me.

It takes more to shock people these days, so the opinions of which is better will differ.
In the 1970's, we didn't see the violence and stuff we see now on the news, so to scare people, it takes more to get the younger generation today. So you're both probably on the mark.
