The Republican Party is really good at getting people to vote against their economic self-interest by distracting them with hot-button social issues. Even if they're ultimately irrelevant or there's nothing the GOP can do about it, like railing against "Hollywood filth". The entertainment industry is a business, and as corporate lapdogs by choice, they won't do anything about it except get votes. Besides, there's this pesky thing called the First Amendment ...

Because, based on what I have found talking to people, is that they prefer the principles of Republicans: smaller government, lower taxes among them. I asked a guy once, who worked as a painter, why he was a republican. He said that his job was his choice, and that if he wanted to get rich someday, he wanted to be able to reap the rewards of his efforts. He thought that the democrats were condescending. As someone who worked hard, he thought it was unfair that the harder you work, the more you are taxed.

He also thought that governemnt was too much in people's business. His one gripe with the Republicans was that he thought that the drug war should end.

Granted this is only one person, but many people in the middle class I know think similarly.

UPDATE: The person below me claims that there is little class mobility in this country. I would like to know what study that person has looked at. The fact is, more people move from the very bottom fifth of the economic ladder to the top fifth, than stay at the bottom. There is a lot of mobility in this country; if you look at individuals over time, you can see that. This person obviously has not done their homework.

the new "neocon" movement has pulled religion into the equation.. so now you can either be a traditional fiscal republican or a new "ethics" based republican.. a lot of the middle class and poor voted republican because of what they perceive as ethical issues.. things like gay marriage. eventually you will probably see the equivalent of the green party come out of the republican party.. because they don't see eye to eye on many things.

Because they are dumb enough to not realize that the republicans only look after the Rich, but the same could be said for the ones who vote Democrat, I guess they are all dumb

"A poor person voting for a Republican is like a chicken voting for Col. Sanders." - quote

The Republicans have been able to use social issues (gay marriage, abortion) to take poor votes away from the Democrats. Poor people who vote for a Republican generally are voting against their own financial interest which does boggle the mind.

Because this is still America and we still have the ability to change and grow. Is everyone able to accomplish this? No
Do some succeed only to lose it all? Yes
Do the policies of Democrats aid those that wish to live the American Dream? I dont think so

Because they drank the koolaid and don't understand two fundamental things:
1. that they will NEVER be rich (there is very little class mobility in this country; the class you were born into is where you will stay) and
2. Making the world a less safe place for everyone else will not make us more safe.
Basically.
