This doesn't make sense. If a runner misses a base, scores, and runs into the dugout, isn't he out of the baseline at that point? Why does the other team have to throw to that base to get the runner called out?

Rule 7.08 states that a runner will only be called out for leaving the baseline if he's attempting to do so in order to avoid being tagged. If he leaves the path to avoid touching a bag, it's up to the fielding team to appeal. The exception comes in a case where the winning run is on base, a guy homers, and the "winning run" guy just leaves his base and goes to celebrate. In that case, he has abandoned the base, but not in the case you present.

The appeal rule you're talking about is 7.10, and the onus is always on the defense. I agree that it seems kind of odd, but it makes things interesting.

Yes, it's true, the out has to be officially recorded. And this is done by having the pitcher come to the 'stretch' position, stepping off the rubber, and throwing to the base they think was missed. Then the umpire either calls the runner/batter safe or out.

Every play has to end with either a safe or out call. If, for example (and this has happened), a runner slides into home, but misses the plate in his slide, and the catcher misses tagging him with the ball, the umpire will just stand there, making no sign, until either the batter touches home plate or the catcher tags him out. I've seen this happen, both the runner and the catcher will stand there, waiting for the umpire to make a call, and then one of them will realize what happened. Either the runner will try to tag the plate, or the catcher will tag the runner... It's funny when it happens.

If the runner misses the base it becomes like when u have to tag the base like when u go to steal but then u have to go back and tag the base if you dont go for the steal. Its like the same thing because if you miss the base the opposite team can throw the ball and get u out but only if u didnt or dont touch the base before they throw the ball. Well i hope you sort of understand now, its just one of those "wierd" rules....meg

Actually you dont, if you inform the umpire that your going to tag the runner for missing the base he would be out that way also.By rule its so easy to mess that up and if you dont do it just right the ump will call the runner safe.

Yeah its just a technicality - I guess they want to see that you've noticed they missed it or otherwise you don't deserve the out.

The other pointless rule is that you have to round the bases after a home run over the wall. Once it is gone, its gone!

To officially record the out.

It may sound silly, but the out must be recorded. Otherwise, they are never technically out.
