9/11 was a catastrophic event; a huge meteor hitting earth would be a catastrophic event; the earthquake that hit around Christmas 2005 was a catastrophic event; hurricane Katrina was catastrophic.

And, in my world losing my family would be catastrophic.

It is a total systems failure. In terms of engineering, this is when all safety and support systems have failed. Multiple redundancies for safety and support are built into a system and when all of these fail that is considered catastrophic. In terms of natural disaster, the same is true. Not only did something bad happen, it happened to a lot of people, costing lives, money, and resources.
