Ronaldinho obviously gets the most individual recognition but I think it's been awhile (so far for the 21st century) since any one player has dominated the game. This was evidenced at this year's World Cup, since no one player managed to rise head and shoulders above the others.
It is also difficult to say who's the best player in soccer since it's very difficult to be a complete player in this sport. Defenders defend, midfielders attack, hold, and win ball possession, and strikers score. So I may tell you a striker's the best player since his skills are most eye-catching, but the best player might in reality be a defender or midfielder.
All of that said, if I had to pick a player I'd probably go with Lionel Messi of Barcelona since he shows the most signs of being a standout player for years to come. If I had to pick the best team I'd go with Barcelona, but my answer provides evidence of another flaw in answering this question: respondents will always pick their favourite team, and a player from that team as the best.

Drogba right now is the most complete striker in the whole world. Previous seasons he had his power where he could jump for almost any ball and win it for his team mates, and he could finish. But his first touch was dreadful.
This season he has the same power, but now he's acquired an excellent one touch game, he has incredible pace and acceleration, trickery, and is much more accurate and clinical (and albeit a bit lucky at times) in front of goal.

Messi is most definately the best player. And he will only get better. He is so young and has so much time for improvement. They dont call him the next Maradona for nothing. He will blow us all away over the next several years! Barca for best team. I love their variety of players too.
By the way Droga IS very good too though.
