Have you been there?? Then you would know. The "one-child" policy is not a law, as most people think it is, "it is a policy enforced by the system of punishments" Though there is a Marriage Law since 1980, insisting the practice of family planning, there is not one on the amount of children one family can have. The marriage Law encourages late marriages, late childbirths, one child per couple, and it helps space the time between children being born. Having one child is really encouraged, more in the urban areas than in the countryside. Women who are pregnant who have been authorized by the government, get birth coupons entitling them to have a child. Women who don't have their births authorized risk being punished by the government. Results for following the policy can include things like monthly financial rewards, extended maternity leave, increases land allocation, preferential treatment in education, housing and employment.

There are also punishments that go to the whole town, not just an individual, for not having a pregnancy authorized, which include Fines, forfeiture of government benefits,
demotion and discharge from government work.

There can be exceptions to the "one-child" policy, some families have had up to three children without a punishment. Families whose first child is unable to work, pregnancy that occurs after couples decided to adopt, and those returning over seas, are allowed to have a second child.

I understand where the policy is coming from, and I agree to some extent of the policy. I think it is ridiculous to have lists of situations when a family can have a child, and I also don't agree with having punishments for having a child.

The population in China is growing. Even though I support freedom in children and choice of family population, China's population is growing so fast. They have the most people in the world, therefore using the most resources such as paper, food, and water.

Water is a limited resource. Many people in Africa have to live without clean, but muddy water everyday. If China does not control its population, then the world's source of freshwater would soon become VERY limited due to the massiveness of China's population. While it COULD control its population, more people in poorer countries could get the world's freshwater. So, that one child policy is for controlling population and not using up too many resources when necessary.

Trees are a renewable resource, but Chinese people, like everyone else, uses paper. If their pop isn't controlled by the one-child policy, then more trees will have to be cut in the world, and global warming will increase greatly.

Food are scarce in places such as Africa, again. As China holds the record fraction of the world's population, it uses the most food resources. If it selfishly lets its population grow, then more famine will occur in the world. Therefore, the one-child policy once again reduces population size, thus spreading the use of resources across the globe rather than on China.

But I still hate the one-child policy. xD

The one-child policy has helped reduce what could otherwise be a catostrophic growth rate. Becasue of that policy quite soon India will surpass China as the largest nation on earth. The limited resources of the entire world are severely taxed by population growth. While dictatorial policies may not be the best solution to the problem, they are better than doing nothing.

Ok, ignore all the ignorant people who say that there's no good in the policy. They are obviously ignorant people, who only care about their own country.
Like some of the other answeres said, China is WAY too oever-populated. In fact, it's the MOST populated country in the world. THAT'S why it need a one-child policy.

It was instituted as a form of population control because china populations has exploded and the country may not have enough resources to take care of that many people at the rate of growth they were experiencing

actually stop reading western propaganda and wikipedia, the one child policy in china doesnt stop their population but they are just reinforcing or strenghening their governement for example a poor parents who are living on rural areas needs to have only one child but if the mother gave birth again to another child the parents need to pay the government for breaking the law (ofcourse the child wont be killed) but if the parent failed to pay the gorvernment for breaking the law the government will soon take your child and they will be the one who will give him/her an education and feed him/her then she he will be a part of chinas government (soldier, police, sometimes one of the members of central; republic depends on his intelligence (sprry for wrong grammar, sentence im living in HK :) hope this one help ;) they are not cutting their population but strengthening the stability of their govt from free resources and children are all included too :)

china wanted to cut down on their population so they initiated the one child policy.

honestly i don't really like that policy because its forcing people to only have 1 child.

there will be no good coming from that policy.

I am personally against it and i wrote a persuasive essay on it. The people who are for it see the good that it lowers the population in the evergrowing china.

I believe it goes to show you that china is truly a communistic country. I believe that they too should be allowed to have a choice.
