If you're using a laptop, problems like yours are very common. You'll sometimes see an error message that says, "USB device not recognized" right? USB optical mouses are sometimes a problem when plugged into the laptop because it doesn't have software to be recognized as a mouse. The reason why the optical mouse was able to be used is because it is a plug and play device, and the system will try and operate the device. But without software to ensure stability, it would take quite a while to get the mouse to work. You need to install that mouse software.

You don't need a new fitting This new mouse should fit into a spare USB port and they are more reliable and faster than the old mouse ports.

If you turn on your pc and way until its finished booting then install the software and plug in the mouse.

More and more pc peripheral are USB connections now so if you don't have a spare USB port buy an adapter so you can plug a few devices into the same port.

Hello,
To start off with click on the link below to get a better knowlage of what certain plug sockets are on your computer and what they do:-

Seccondly to the answer. Your description indicates to me that the Optical mouse that you have bought has a USB plug on it. Now you don't need to attach it to another cable (green/purple socket) just look on your computer for a plug that looks like the socket on the link below . . . . .
http://www.winster.org/USBPort.jpg

Plug the optical mouse into this socket. You might have to turn the plug round eg, upside down to see which way fits but it should.

Your mouse won't work straight away but if you leave it for about 2-3 minutes and Microsoft Windows will automatically load the information needed for the mouse to work YOU wont need to do anything.

And hopefully that should sort your problem!
Good Bye!

The "square" fitting sounds like USB. If your computer is modern enough there should be a couple of these at the back of your computer. I'd say don't worry about converting them to the old green/purple connections as the USB works just as good as what you did have.

Just plug it into a USB port. Surely your computer has several.

Find a USB port in your PC. Or you could also try to find a USB-to-PS/2 adapter.
