If you have left the iron on the safety board of the ironing table (the place where you place the iron when you are ironing clothes) or if the iron is placed with the hotplate facing up then there is almost no chance it can cause a fire.

If the iron is left on the board on some fabric tho there is a chance of a fire as the cloth might ignite before the safety cut off tirggers and the fire may spread.

Leaving An Iron On

Well probably not with auto shut offs but its a good idea, as with the old ones that didn't, to be in the habit of unpluging it. Not all new ones have auto shut off either. Though odds are slim someone, or even you could knock it over, or someone else could come behind you to use it and not realize it's hot. At the very least its electricity used to leave it on and it is a hot thing....... the world is littered with people who say "how did this happen" when the house burnt down when they were that one in a 1,000,000 chance of an appliance malfunctioning. So it would make sense to unplug anything that makes heat.

Many modern irons have automatic shut off's, but if left in contact with fabric, it could cause a fire.

Most new irons have an automatic shut off (thank goodness)

It is better to shut them off, but most irons now have a automactic shut off, after awhile when you quit ironing, just don't leave it laying down, or it might burn something before it shuts off.

Probably, but I think most newer ones have an automatic shut-off just for that reason.
