I guess it's 50-50... 50% ability to make an impact to the audience's life or make a trademark in movie history, contributing to the film industry by means of movies... While the other 50% is business. Of course, whether you like it or not, it's a business, and who's the costumers? We are. The money the movie made will profit all who are in the movies, from the major distributor to the director of the film. Hence, we are the one who make movies and actors be a phenomenal hit and success!
We watch movies for the benefits of ourselves...
We watch movies for the benefits of the movie production team...
It's like "You watch, I gain"

It's a money making business-- the art form is secondary-- any movie company would be much happier raking in the dough on a piece of crap than getting rave reviews for an artsy film that doesn't bring in tons of bucks.

Of course movies are a messaging system used by the government, to sway our thoughts and to subliminally line our conscience with what they need us to believe, just like the radio and the news...do you think that all Media produced is not passed by government censors before its spread across the land? Even now there are programs wrote to eliminate certain words or pages containing that word on the Internet. We live in a world of slavery and we are allowed to call it freedom.

Bit of both but mostly about making money. If the story is good enough to make money and the public are interested in it, then producers will commission it and invest large sums of money to make profit.

That depends on who directed the film and who's money is backing it up. There are plenty of film makers that want to get a message across, but not every one can afford to. So we end up with over-glitzed, over-enhanced, brain-candy films called "blockbusters".

both...because we are a curious society, we always want to life from an outside perspective. movies stroke the curiosity of humanity and we will always pay money to see aspects of life we don't normally see. it's like when people say they don't like to see blood, but they can't help but look. hence, a money-making empire.
