i have tried f8 at start up, then rebooting--still nothing different--do i have a virus?

the problem doesn't seem to be a virus harm, I suspect the start menu bar has beem hiden by minimising it or it has probably been relocated to another courner of the screen pls try clicking and draging the mouse from all the four courners of the screen. I really hope i understood ur question.

odds are you may have. Try inserting the AV disc in the drive as you boot up to run a scan. If not try using the windows disc to repair the installation.
